Raipur, Oct 5:    India has marked a key advancement in its defense capabilities by successfully test-firing three flights of the indigenous Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles at the Pokhran firing ranges in Rajasthan. These tests, carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), are part of ongoing trials aimed at strengthening the Indian Armed Forces’ ability to combat aerial threats, including enemy aircraft and drones.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the successful trials and congratulated the DRDO, the Indian Army, and industry partners involved in the initiative. He highlighted that the advanced missile system, featuring modern technology, will significantly enhance the military’s defensive capabilities against aerial threats.

The VSHORADS missiles, developed over several years, aim to replace the aging Russian Igla missiles currently used for short-range air defense, fulfilling a critical modernization need.

The project also includes collaboration with two private companies, underscoring the increasing involvement of India’s defense industry in indigenous technology development.

This successful testing comes alongside Defence Minister Singh’s statements at the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) 2024 in New Delhi, where he reiterated India’s dedication to peaceful dispute resolution and regional cooperation. He emphasized India’s position as a “credible and preferred security partner and first responder” in the Indo-Pacific, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s SAGAR initiative, which focuses on sustainable development and collective security.
