Vice President Dhankhar Calls Northeast the ‘Heart and Soul of Bharat,’ Urges Media to Promote Its Growth

NEWDELHI, Oct 5:    Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar today hailed the Northeast as the heart and soul of Bharat while urging the media to spotlight the region’s potential for tourism and development.

Speaking at ‘The Conclave 2024,’ organized by Pratidin Media Network in New Delhi, he described the Northeast as a vibrant blend of cultures, traditions, and natural beauty, representing the true essence of India.

He emphasized the transformative effects of the Government’s “Act East” policy, noting the region’s improved connectivity, with airport numbers doubling and waterways expanding significantly, leading to increased interest and investment nationwide.

Dhankhar also highlighted the recent recognition of Assamese as one of India’s five classical languages, which he said reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage. He praised the Northeast’s spiritual and natural sites, including the Kamakhya Temple and Kaziranga National Park, urging greater focus on these treasures.

Reflecting on the region’s economic potential, he stressed that tourism could drive significant employment growth and transform the Northeast into a global destination. Dhankhar called on the media to act as ambassadors for the Northeast, promoting its developmental progress and tourism opportunities.

He also underscored the importance of responsible journalism, asking the media to counter sensationalism and misinformation, which can damage the nation’s unity. Dhankhar recalled the media’s courageous role during the Emergency and emphasized that the press must uphold its responsibility in safeguarding democracy.

Concluding his address, the Vice President praised India’s current economic resilience, with foreign exchange reserves exceeding $700 billion, a far cry from the challenges of the 1990s. He reaffirmed the media’s critical role in promoting balanced discourse and helping to shape a stronger Bharat. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Pratidin Group Chairman Jayanta Baruah were among the dignitaries present.
