ITANAGAR, Oct 24: The scenic town of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh came alive on Thursday, as it hosted the 2nd edition of the International Tawang Marathon, coinciding with United Nations Day. Organized by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army, this year’s marathon drew an impressive 4,580 participants, including 1,199 women, from 27 states across India and two friendly foreign nations. Among the participants was an 80-year-old runner from Mumbai, showcasing the event’s appeal to all age groups.
The event was honored by the presence of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Lt. Gen. Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Gajraj Corps, both of whom joined the participants, underscoring the spirit of unity and collaboration that defined the marathon.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas, the marathon presented a significant challenge with steep inclines and sharp descents, testing runners’ endurance in high-altitude conditions. Participants were rewarded with breathtaking views of Tawang’s pristine landscape along the route.
Beyond being a race, the Tawang Marathon provided a substantial economic and cultural boost to the region. The influx of thousands of participants and visitors significantly benefited local businesses, particularly in tourism and hospitality. The event showcased Tawang’s potential as a world-class adventure tourism destination and highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the area, allowing visitors to experience the traditions and lifestyle of the Monpa community.
Additionally, the marathon strengthened connections between the local population, the Indian Army, and the government, emphasizing the strong bond shared by the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army.
With the successful conclusion of the 2nd edition of the International Tawang Marathon, Tawang has firmly established itself on the global marathon map, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for adventure, culture, and community spirit.
