SENAPATI, Oct 25: The Naga community is reeling from the tragic deaths of Themmaso Tallanao, President of the Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL), and Masothing Mungshon, Assistant General Secretary of TMNL, who were killed in a vehicle accident near the Indo-Myanmar border in Kamjong, Ukhrul District.
The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF)have expressed profound shock and sorrow over the untimely deaths of Themmaso Tallanao, President of the Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL), and Masothing Mungshon, the Assistant General Secretary of TMNL. The two leaders were killed in a tragic vehicle accident near the Indo-Myanmar border in Kamjong, Ukhrul District, on October 24.
The accident occurred while Tallanao and Masothing were on a reconnaissance mission as part of the NSF, assessing the implications of the abrogation of the Free Movement Regime in Ukhrul and Chandel districts. The NSF described their dedication and commitment to the Naga cause as a testament to their courage and deep sense of responsibility.
In a statement mourning the irreplaceable loss, the NSF noted that their deaths have created a void that cannot be filled, yet their legacy will continue to inspire Naga youth and the wider community in the pursuit of justice, peace, and sovereignty. The federation extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Tangkhul community, and all affected by this tragedy. “As we grieve, we stand united in our resolve to carry forward the cause for which Tallanao and Masothing gave their all, keeping their memories alive in our hearts and actions,” the NSF added.
In remembrance, the NSF directed all its federating units to lower their flags to half-mast from October 24-25.
The Mao Students’ Union also conveyed its condolences, describing the incident as a significant loss for the Naga community. The MSU expressed solidarity with the Tangkhul Youth Council and extended support to the grieving families, recognizing the unwavering commitment and service of the two leaders, whose contributions will be greatly missed.
The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has expressed the devastating loss of these remarkable leaders has profoundly affected the Naga community. They were not just leaders but beacons of hope and dedication, whose contributions and steadfast vision in the pursuit of justice and peace will continue to inspire future generations, especially Naga youth.
The DNSU offered its sympathies and prayers to the bereaved families and the Tangkhul community, asking for strength and solace during these difficult times. The union reaffirmed its commitment to carrying forward the legacy of the leaders to ensure their sacrifices were not in vain.
The Global Naga Forum also mourned the loss, referring to Tallanao and Masothing as “warriors” committed to the protection of the Naga people. The Forum noted that their tragic deaths serve as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made in the ongoing struggle for Naga rights and identity, embodying the spirit of courage and duty in the face of adversity.
