SENAPATI, Oct 31: The Senapati District’s leading organizations, including the Naga People’s Organization (NPO), Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA), and Senapati District Women’s Association (SDWA), issued a strong condemnation of a recent violent assault on two Naga Poumai by members of Arambai Tenggol.
V Hrangao Blesson Poumai, son of Veino from Kodom Khullen Village, and Dalou Poumai, son of Hriinii from Liyai Khullen Village, were returning from Thoubal after purchasing livestock when they were forcefully detained by Arambai Tenggol (AT) Unit-18 members in Lamshang, Imphal. The alleged attack, took place at around 3 a.m. on October 31.
Reports indicate that the men were taken to the AT camp, where they endured severe physical assault, resulting in multiple injuries. Furthermore, a sum of Rs 61,400 was seized from them at gunpoint. Despite presenting proof of their identities, they were repeatedly threatened and assaulted with automatic rifles, an action that the organizations state constitutes a violation of human rights and respect for human dignity.
In a joint statement on Thursday, the Senapati organizations highlighted that this violent act stands in stark contrast to societal values of respect, dignity, and peace. They criticized Arambai Tenggol, which claims to be a revivalist group promoting the Sanamahi religion among the Meitei, asserting that incidents like this one cast serious doubt on the organization’s true intentions, as it continues to engage in public harassment and violence.
The statement underscored that the assault on Blesson and Dalou goes beyond individual harm, challenging core community values of hard work, entrepreneurship, and mutual respect. The organizations expressed deep concern over the failure of law enforcement to prevent such attacks, which they argue undermine professionalism and community peace.
In a call for justice, the Frontal Organizations of Senapati District urged the Manipur police and judiciary to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure accountability for the perpetrators. They demanded that the Manipur government deliver justice to both victims within 48 hours, warning that a lack of action would prompt further steps to protect the community.
In response to the incident, the Arambai Tenggol Unit-18 has denied its involvement and maintained that they let go off them upon identifying them as Poumai. They also stated that the group responsible for this act may have ties with the KCP (Ibungo Ngangom) faction.
