GUWAHATI, Nov 4: The Thadou community concluded its Thadou Convention 2024 in Guwahati on November 2 by expressing conditional support for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, contingent on the Government of India’s initiation of the process. The Community leaders indicated that the NRC could help secure national interests and protect the rights and welfare of Indian citizens and indigenous groups. They acknowledged the state government’s ongoing efforts to address citizens’ concerns and promote their well-being.
The Thadou leadership stressed the importance of addressing specific issues related to documentation that tribal populations might face. They pointed out that many tribal communities often lack traditional records, which could complicate their citizenship verification under the NRC framework. To prevent the unintended exclusion of legitimate citizens, they urged the government to provide clear guidelines regarding acceptable documentation before the NRC is implemented in Manipur.
Additionally, the Thadou Community highlighted the urgent need to combat drug abuse in Manipur, which affects various communities. They reiterated their support for the Manipur government’s “War on Drugs” initiative, calling for increased community involvement, better planning, and a focused strategy to maximize the campaign’s social, economic, and environmental benefits.
They call for collaboration among all stakeholders to strengthen initiatives related to the NRC and drug abuse prevention, aiming for a stable and prosperous future for the people of Manipur.
