GUWAHATI, Nov 11: Renowned climate activist and Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient Sonam Wangchuk will lead a major seminar examining the Sixth Schedule’s impact on Northeast India over the past 75 years. The two-day event, organized by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council in collaboration with the Centre for Karbi Studies (CKS), Diphu, and the Political Science Department of Assam University, begins today in Diphu.
Wangchuk is set to facilitate a roundtable discussion with notable Karbi scholars, including Dr. Dharamsing Teron and Holiram Terang, focusing on ongoing issues around regional autonomy. The seminar, which coincides with Karbi Anglong Day, will feature multiple technical sessions assessing the effectiveness of constitutional provisions for protecting tribal rights and autonomy.
The gathering brings together researchers and policy experts to address governance and developmental challenges faced by autonomous councils in Northeast India, with a specific emphasis on Karbi Anglong. Wangchuk arrived in Diphu on November 10, joining what organizers describe as a crucial forum on tribal autonomy since India’s independence.
