SENAPATI, Nov 13: The tripartite talks concerning the creation of new districts in Manipur have been rescheduled to November 29, 2024, following a request from the United Naga Council (UNC) for a later date, citing unavoidable prior engagements of some UNC members.
Originally planned for November 13, the talks were postponed after the UNC expressed its inability to participate on that date. AK Mishra, Advisor (North East) to the Ministry of Home Affairs, who had initially invited the Naga body for talks in Senapati on November 8, informed the UNC of the new date.
The tripartite talks, which involve the Central government, the United Naga Council, and the Manipur state government, resumed on October 11, 2024, in New Delhi after a long hiatus. The dialogue originally began after the Manipur government’s decision on December 8, 2016, to create seven new districts, a move opposed by the UNC. In protest, the UNC imposed a 139-day economic blockade along Manipur’s national highways. The blockade was lifted following the initiation of talks, with the first round held on March 19, 2017, leading to several subsequent rounds of discussions.
