JIRIBAM, Nov 16: The bodies of a woman and two children were found near the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers on the Manipur-Assam border late Friday night, raising suspicions that they may be the remains of six individuals who went missing from Jiribam district earlier this week. The missing persons, which included three women and three children, disappeared following a gunfight and the killing of 10 individuals by security forces in the area.
The bodies were found approximately 16 km from where the individuals went missing, raising further concerns among local authorities and residents.
According to Barak Bulletin, the bodies of three more individuals were recovered from the Barak River near Jirimukh on Saturday. While official confirmation is still pending, authorities have stated that the three bodies discovered could potentially belong to the missing individuals.
The bodies were transported to Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) in Assam at around 9:00 pm last night, and another three were placed in the morgue in the early hours of Saturday for postmortem examination.
The missing persons were reportedly residing in a relief camp near Bokobera police station, set up after unrest in Manipur began in May 2023. An official stated that they are waiting for the postmortem results to confirm the identities of the bodies and have already collected photographs to aid in identification.
