Meghalaya Unveils Skywalk Project at Mawkdok to Boost Tourism

SHILLONG, Nov 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the foundation of the much-anticipated ‘skywalk project’ at Mawkdok in East Khasi Hills during the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival on Friday.

Mawkdok, a renowned viewpoint in the state, is a must-visit stop for tourists traveling through the Sohra tourism circuit. The site offers breathtaking views of a valley surrounded by lush green hills, making it a popular destination for visitors.

The skywalk project, a flagship initiative of the government, is aimed at further enhancing tourism in the region. “Tourism is a key component of our overall strategy for the region. We are hopeful that the DoNER Ministry will continue to support the region to promote tourism,” Chief Minister Sangma said.

Sangma also expressed his vision of promoting Meghalaya to the global stage and highlighted the special partnership with Japan, which he believes will elevate the festival to new heights. “This partnership with Japan will allow the world to learn about Meghalaya, its culture, and its close affinities with other Asian nations,” he added. The Chief Minister thanked Japan for setting up the ‘Japan Arena’ at the festival venue, which showcased the country’s cultural diversity, food, music, and sports.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, while declaring the Japan Arena open, praised the energy and vibrancy of the people of Northeast India. “It is great to be here in Meghalaya and witness the energy and vibrancy of the people. I am glad to see the Cherry Blossom Festival taking on new, manifold proportions. Thank you, Japan, for your close relationship with India,” he said.

Scindia also lauded Chief Minister Sangma’s leadership in promoting the Cherry Blossom Festival. “I have not seen this level of energy in any concerts in India. Hats off to Conrad and the people of Meghalaya,” he added.

Scindia further emphasized that Meghalaya should aim to be not just the music capital of India, but of Asia.

The Cherry Blossom Festival also featured electrifying performances by R&B icon Akon and the legendary Boney M on Friday, who enthralled the audience at Bhoirymbong in Ribhoi district.
