NEW DELHI, Nov 17: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting today to assess the deteriorating security situation in Manipur, following the latest outbreak of violence in the state. Sources indicate that a key follow-up meeting with senior officials will take place tomorrow at 12 pm. The review comes in the wake of escalating unrest after six people from Meitei communities were found dead, allegedly kidnapped by militants, triggering widespread protests and a violent backlash.
A curfew has been imposed in Imphal West and Imphal East, and internet services have been suspended in several districts as mobs targeted the residences of multiple MLAs, resulting in property damage and public chaos. These developments were prompted by the discovery of the bodies of six individuals, including three women and three children, who had been missing since Monday, when they were allegedly abducted by militants during a gunfight between security forces and insurgents in Jiribam district.
The victims had been living in a relief camp and were reportedly taken by militants after an attack on a police station in the Borobekra area, which led to the death of 11 insurgents on November 11. Meitei organizations quickly accused the militants of kidnapping the family, prompting a massive operation to locate them. The bodies were recovered after the operation, heightening tensions in the region.
The violence and unrest in Manipur have continued to destabilize the state, with mobs further escalating the situation by storming government officials’ homes and engaging in acts of vandalism. Meanwhile, the National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, withdrew its support to the BJP-led Manipur government, citing concerns over the inability of Chief Minister N Biren Singh to restore peace in the state.
Amit Shah’s review of the security situation comes as the violence continues to spiral, raising concerns over the government’s response and the need for swift measures to restore order. The situation in Manipur remains volatile, with widespread protests and a deepening political crisis. The upcoming meeting is expected to focus on ways to address the growing unrest and bring stability back to the state.
