SENAPATI, Nov 21: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Naga Peoples’ Organization (NPO) and the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, on Thursday. The agreement aims to maintain, safeguard and promote a genuine atmosphere between the Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur.
The MoU ensures that Naga commuters traveling through Kuki-dominated areas will not face harassment, while Senapati Naga traders, trucks, and commuters are exempt from taxation. Any issues related to taxation will be addressed by CoTU, which has pledged to take full responsibility for resolving such matters.
Both organizations have also committed to providing mutual assistance in resolving any issues that may arise, emphasizing accountability and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The agreement, signed by representatives of both organizations, is binding and enforceable. Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to implementing its provisions and ensuring compliance by all concerned.
The agreement comes at a time when illegal tax collection and extortion of transporters, traders and commuters have become a growing concern, causing significant distress to those travelling through the Senapati-Imphal route.
