GUWAHATI, Dec 4: In a significant policy move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced a statewide ban on the consumption and serving of beef in public spaces, including hotels and restaurants. The decision expands existing restrictions that previously limited beef consumption near temples.
Speaking on the development, CM Sarma remarked, “In Assam, we have decided that beef will not be served in any restaurant or hotel, and also it will not be allowed at any public function or public place. From today, we have completely decided to stop the consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants, and public venues.”
The Chief Minister emphasized that the move aims to promote communal harmony and respect the sentiments of diverse communities in Assam. “What Bhupen Borah and Rakibul Hussain wanted will be fulfilled now. Therefore, we hope that the Congress will support us in this decision,” he added.
