NEW DELHI, Dec 4: MPs from several opposition parties of the INDIA bloc on Wednesday staged a protest outside Parliament’s Makar Dwar, demanding a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the allegations against Adani Group. Leaders from Congress, AAP, RJD, Shiv Sena (UBT), DMK, Left parties, and others raised slogans and displayed a banner reading “Modi-Adani are one” in support of their demand. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) stayed away from the protest.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, RJD MP Manoj Jha, and Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi were among the prominent figures participating in the protest. The protest was a response to the indictment of Adani Group’s chairperson, Gautam Adani, and other officials by US prosecutors on charges of bribery and fraud. The opposition parties have linked this issue to a broader demand for a JPC investigation into the various controversies surrounding the Adani Group.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who is a vocal critic of Adani, did not participate in the protest as he had left for Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh in the morning, along with a Congress delegation, to address violence-related issues there.
This protest follows an advisory issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Tuesday, urging MPs not to obstruct movement by protesting near Parliament gates due to safety concerns. The opposition MPs had also protested in the same location on Tuesday.
Congress and other opposition parties have claimed that the indictment of Adani in a US court “vindicates” their demand for a JPC investigation into the alleged corruption and irregularities within the Adani Group. Gandhi has called for Adani’s immediate arrest in connection with the charges. In contrast, the Adani Group has rejected the allegations as baseless.
