KOHIMA, Dec 9: The Angami Women Organisation (AWO), the apex women’s body of the Angami community, has expressed strong disappointment over an Instagram reel created by Manipur-based fashion influencer Agou Hengoulal Sitlhou, which they claim disrespected and misused Naga traditional attires.

In an official statement, AWO President Neithono R. Sothu and General Secretary Atono Kense highlighted the profound historical and cultural significance of Naga traditional garments, stating that these attires are not mere garments but symbols of heritage, identity, and values. Each piece, they said, embodies the stories of ancestors and is woven with care and pride, making them an integral part of Naga culture.

The organisation stressed that Naga traditional attire must be portrayed with respect and in adherence to cultural traditions. They cautioned that misuse, mockery, or commercialization of these attires diminishes their meaning and undermines the rich cultural heritage they represent.

While the AWO acknowledged the importance of appreciating Naga traditional clothing, they insisted that such appreciation should be based on understanding and respect. They criticised the use of these garments as costumes or for profit-driven purposes, describing such actions as disrespectful to the communities and detrimental to the authenticity of their traditions.

The AWO claimed the Instagram reel showcased various tribal attires in a way that failed to honor their cultural significance. As a result, they urged the creator to remove the content and issue a public apology for the inappropriate portrayal of Naga traditional clothing.

Additionally, the organisation called on individuals to develop a deeper understanding of Naga traditional attire before representing or displaying them publicly. They emphasized that only with respect and knowledge can the cultural richness and historical significance of these garments be truly preserved.
