KOHIMA, Dec 9: In a unique blend of spirituality and culture, the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) hosted the first-ever Advent Christmas devotional service during the 25th edition of the Hornbill Festival at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama on Sunday. This special service, held alongside the vibrant cultural celebrations, marked a significant moment for both locals and tourists who received the blessings of Christmas in the heart of Nagaland’s largest tourism event.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who attended the service, expressed his joy at the coincidence of the Christmas service with the milestone 25th year of the Hornbill Festival. Rio extended festive greetings, acknowledging the importance of the occasion and emphasizing the values of love, unity, and understanding, which he hoped would guide the thoughts and actions of all present. He urged the gathering to embrace tolerance, forgiveness, and goodwill, reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas—the birth of Jesus Christ, which he said brought hope, peace, and salvation to the world.

Rio also delved into the deeper connection between spirituality, indigenous heritage, and political identity. He highlighted Nagaland’s political struggle and historical milestones like the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) Act of 1873, which continues to protect the region’s cultural heritage. Rio emphasized the role of these provisions, including the special status of Nagaland under Article 371A of the Indian Constitution, in preserving the Naga identity and sustaining unity within the state.

Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho, the Advisor of NJCF, was the main speaker at the event and delivered the Christmas message. He focused on the true essence of Christmas, urging the gathering to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ amidst the busyness of modern life. He stressed that Christmas is for everyone, regardless of their background, and called on people to embrace the deeper spiritual message of the season. “Christmas is not about Santa Claus; it is about God who came and dwelt among us,” said Rev Dr Keyho, urging the congregation to live out their faith by being a light and salt to the world.
