GUWAHATI, Dec 10: A silent protest was held on Tuesday in Guwahati, Assam, to express solidarity with the people of Manipur and demand the restoration of peace and normalcy in the state. The event took place at Chandmari, Guwahati, coinciding with International Human Rights Day, to highlight the ongoing turmoil in Manipur.
The protest was organized by a group of over 230 writers, intellectuals, and eminent personalities who have expressed deep concern over the violence and unrest that has plagued Manipur for over a year and a half. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and displaced thousands of people.
Led by the Axom Nagarik Samaj and Bharat Jodo Abhiyaan, Assam, the protest featured prominent figures such as Hiren Gohain, Harekrishna Deka, Thomas Menamparampil, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, and Dulal Ch Goswami, among others. The protestors criticized the government’s focus on elections rather than addressing the critical concerns of the people.
They also voiced concerns about the potential for the unrest in Manipur to spread to other states in the North East. The demonstration was a call for immediate action to restore peace and stability to the region.
