IMPHAL, Dec 10: Thousands gathered at THAU Ground, Imphal, on International Human Rights Day to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), which many view as a violation of fundamental rights.
The protest was led by prominent civil society organizations, including the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, Manipuri Students’ Federation, Centre for Human Rights, and the All Manipur Women Voluntary Association. The event saw a large turnout from students, activists, and citizens from diverse backgrounds, all united in their call for justice and dignity.
Carrying banners and placards, the participants chanted slogans such as “Repeal AFSPA,” “Self-determination is our right,” and “Stop killing innocent people by Kuki terrorists.” The speakers condemned AFSPA as a “draconian law” that fosters impunity and human rights abuses, demanding its immediate withdrawal from Manipur and the entire Northeast region.
The protest followed the recent enforcement of AFSPA in six police station areas of Manipur, including the violence-affected Jiribam district, after a directive from the Centre in November. This decision contradicted the Manipur government’s earlier order from October 1, which had excluded some areas from AFSPA’s enforcement. Despite these concerns, the Union Home Ministry justified the move, highlighting security reasons in the state.
At the rally, speakers emphasized the need for a governance approach centered on peace and respect for human rights, a challenge that has persisted in Manipur. The protest underscored the state’s growing resolve to seek justice and dignity in the face of ongoing challenges, with mounting calls for the removal of AFSPA to safeguard human rights.
