SENAPATI, Dec 13: A cold wave has intensified its grip on Northeast India, with temperatures plunging across the region. On December 12, several districts in Assam recorded temperatures below 10°C, and Shillong in Meghalaya remained the coldest place in the region. The cold wave has also impacted Manipur, with temperatures in the state dropping significantly, contributing to the widespread winter chill.

In Manipur, the IMD official indicated that Imphal, the capital city, experienced a sharp dip in temperature, making it one of the colder locations in the region. Shillong, located in Meghalaya, was the coldest, with temperatures significantly lower than other parts of the region. The cold weather was also felt in Lengpui in Mizoram and Imphal in Manipur, where the hilly terrain and altitude contributed to the notable temperature drop.

The IMD explained that upper Assam, including areas close to the hilly terrains of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, tends to experience colder temperatures compared to lower Assam and the Barak Valley. On December 12, Silchar in the Barak Valley recorded a minimum temperature of 15.8°C, making it the warmest place in the region, while Dhubri in lower Assam recorded the second-highest temperature of 15°C.

The IMD has forecasted no significant change in minimum temperatures across the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, with dry weather expected to persist. The IMD has also warned of shallow to moderate fog in isolated areas across the region, which could reduce visibility.

For residents of the affected regions, especially in hilly areas like Imphal, Shillong, and Lengpui, the cold wave is likely to continue in the coming days, with no immediate relief in sight.
