IMPHAL, Dec 14: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has intensified its efforts to construct the India-Myanmar border fence near Moreh town in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, an official confirmed on Saturday. India shares a 1,643 km border with Myanmar, with 398 km of that stretch passing through Manipur.
According to a statement from PRO Defence Kohima, BRO has commenced work on erecting the border fence in the general area of Moreh. The official noted that the work is being carried out in phases, and more detailed information about the project will be available once a substantial length of fencing is completed.
The project is being overseen by Project Sewak, which is responsible for road construction in Nagaland and Manipur. The project’s headquarters is based in Dimapur, the officer added.
Currently, only 10 km of the international border near Moreh is fenced. The broader plan to secure the entire 1,643 km porous India-Myanmar border is critical due to concerns about smuggling activities involving arms, ammunition, and narcotics. The fencing project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 31,000 crore.
The initiative is a significant step towards bolstering security along the border, with an emphasis on curbing illegal activities and ensuring greater control over the region.
