Senapati, June 30, 2024 –

The recent kidnapping of two officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has cast a glaring spotlight on the severe lack of weaponry across most check post. The tragic incident, which unfolded at Tamphung, could have been averted had the police at Peren Check Post been properly equipped.

The two NHIDCL officials, who were on their work were kidnapped by armed miscreants. The police stationed at the Peren Check Post were rendered helpless as they were confronted by heavily armed kidnappers. Without any weapons to defend themselves or to protect the officials, the police could do nothing but watch as the kidnappers overpowered them and disappeared into the night.

The incident is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our police force and the urgent need for immediate intervention. Tamphung being the last village of Manipur bordering Nagaland, is a critical area that demands a fully equipped police outpost. The lack of such outposts at these strategic points leaves not only the villagers at risk but also the travelers they are sworn to protect.

Local residents are now calling on the government of Manipur to take immediate action. “We need an outpost than just a presence; we need a well-equipped force that can actually ensure our safety,” said a concerned citizen. The recent incident at the Peren Check Post should serve as an eye-opener for authorities.

The government must prioritize the safety of its citizens and the police force by ensuring that all check posts are adequately armed. This will not only deter criminal activities but also empower our police officers to respond effectively in times of crisis.

The time for action is now. Our police officers need the tools to do their job, and our citizens deserve to feel safe in their own state.(Representational Image)
