Senapati: 18 June 2024
As heavy rains persist in the Northeast, the flood situation in Assam has significantly worsened. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the devastating floods have claimed the lives of 26 people.
The relentless downpour has caused several rivers to overflow, resulting in the inundation of 470 villages across 15 districts, including Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang, and Kokrajhar.
ASDMA reports that the floods have affected over 161,000 people, with 5,114 seeking refuge in 27 relief camps. The situation remains dire, particularly in Nagaon District where the Kopili River is flowing above the danger level in the Kampur and Raha Revenue Circles.
The India Meteorological Department has forecasted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh until June 21, 2024. This prediction raises further concerns about the ongoing flood threat.
Additionally, landslides have been reported in various parts of the Northeast. In Sikkim, at least six people have lost their lives due to landslides, and over 1,000 tourists have been evacuated to safety.
The situation is evolving, and authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and ensure the safety of affected residents. Stay tuned to the Times of Senapati for further updates on this unfolding crisis.
