Sylhet: Violent confrontations between protesters and ruling Awami League supporters have resulted in 32 deaths and numerous injuries. The unrest unfolded on Sunday when students and opposition groups launched a non-cooperation campaign demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The violence has spread across 13 districts, with the highest casualties reported in Feni, Sirajganj, Munshiganj, Bogura, and Magura. Dhaka, the capital, has also seen fatalities amidst the turmoil.
The clashes erupted early Sunday as demonstrators encountered resistance from Awami League supporters, including activists from the Chhatra League and Jubo League. In response to the escalating violence, the Home Ministry has imposed a nationwide curfew starting at 6 pm.
Additionally, the government has enacted measures to limit communication, including blocking Meta platforms such as Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram, and shutting down 4G mobile internet services.
This latest round of violence follows a previous wave of clashes earlier in the week, where over 200 people were killed in protests against a controversial quota system for government jobs, which reserved 30% of positions for the relatives of war veterans from the 1971 Independence War.
