Guwahati:    Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that a new law will soon be introduced to impose life imprisonment for individuals convicted of ‘love jihad.’ Sarma made this declaration during a meeting with state BJP executives.

The term ‘love jihad’ is used by right-wing groups to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage.

Sarma confirmed that the legislation will specifically target this issue. “We discussed ‘love jihad’ during the elections. We will bring a law in the next few days that will entail life imprisonment for those found indulging in love jihad”, he stated.

In addition to this, Sarma outlined plans for two new laws, including one to regulate land sales between Hindus and Muslims. According to Sarma, if a Muslim wishes to purchase land from a Hindu or vice versa, government permission will be required. He said, “The Assam government is bringing two laws to stop Land Jihad and Love Jihad.”

Sarma also announced a new policy requiring that only individuals born in Assam will be eligible for state government jobs. He emphasized that his government has prioritized indigenous people in job recruitment, and he challenged critics by offering to provide details on one lakh recruited youth to prove their Assamese identity.

Regarding land transactions, Sarma mentioned that while the government cannot outright ban sales between different religious communities, it will mandate government consent for such transactions. He highlighted concerns about land sales in undivided Goalpara district, stating that the government aims to prevent the sale of land to certain communities to protect indigenous ownership.

Sarma also took the opportunity to highlight his government’s achievements, noting that Assam has remained largely free of demonstrations and unrest over the past three years. He praised the inclusion of tribal communities, tea garden workers, and Gorkhas as indigenous people of Assam, asserting that no previous administration had recognized the Gorkhas in this way.

Q. What is Love Jihad?

A. “Love Jihad” is a term used predominantly in India to describe an alleged campaign by Muslim men to convert non-Muslim women to Islam by feigning love and marriage. The concept has been highly controversial and widely debated.

Critics of the term argue that it is a conspiracy theory with no factual basis, used to stoke communal tensions and prejudices against Muslims. They contend that it promotes fear and mistrust between religious communities and infringes on personal freedoms and rights to choose one’s partner.

Supporters of the term, on the other hand, claim that there are organized efforts to manipulate non-Muslim women into converting to Islam, often citing anecdotal evidence and individual cases to support their views.

In response to these allegations, some Indian states have enacted laws against forced religious conversions, which critics argue could be used to target interfaith marriages unfairly.

Overall, “Love Jihad” remains a polarizing and politically charged issue in India, reflecting broader societal tensions related to religion, identity, and individual rights.
