In the dynamic realm of Indian women’s football, Manipur has emerged as a prominent source of talent, consistently producing legends like Oinam Bembem Devi and rising stars such as Panthoi Chanu. The ongoing 2024 SAFF Women’s Championship in Nepal has once again highlighted the skills of Manipuri players, with India kicking off their campaign by defeating Pakistan 5-2. This match celebrated significant achievements, including Bala Devi’s 50th international goal and captain Ashalata Devi’s milestone of 100 appearances. However, the vital contributions of Sorokhaibam Ranjana Chanu, who assisted both goals, largely went unnoticed.
Reflecting on her impact, Ranjana expressed her pride in assisting two goals during the first half of the match. “It felt amazing to contribute to both goals in the first half. Assisting my team in such a crucial match is a proud achievement for me,” she stated. Her initial assist came from a play initiated by goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu, followed by Manisha’s impressive run that led to Dangmei Grace’s goal.
Ranjana began her football journey at 16 years old at her village academy. Despite facing significant challenges, including her father working as a rickshaw puller and her mother as a homemaker, she has risen to become an integral member of the national squad. Currently employed with the Assam Rifles, Ranjana has taken on the role of primary provider for her family following her father’s stroke three years ago.
“I started my football journey in 2009 at my village academy,” Ranjana recalled. “Joining Kryphsa FC in 2012 was a pivotal moment for me. The trials with Assam Rifles transformed my life, enabling me to secure a job that helps support my family financially.”
Having represented India at the U19 level in 2015, Ranjana received her senior team call-up in 2018, making her international debut the following year. After recovering from a knee injury that kept her out of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, her determination saw her return to the starting lineup. To date, Ranjana has worn the national jersey in 36 matches, scoring three goals, and is currently participating in her third SAFF Women’s Championship.
Discussing her struggles, Ranjana shared how her father’s health issues almost led her to quit football. However, her mother’s unwavering support kept her motivated. “Whatever money I had, I gave to my brother so he could train at the TATA Football Academy. My goal is to bring joy to my family, and I hope my father can will be able to see me play one day,” she said.
Ranjana admires her captain, Ashalata Devi, who recently celebrated her 100th international cap. “Asha Di has been an incredible mentor. Her patience and encouragement always uplift the team,” Ranjana acknowledged.
As women’s football continues to flourish in India, players like Ranjana Chanu are setting the stage for future generations. With opportunities from platforms like the Indian Women’s League (IWL), she dreams of showcasing her talent on international stages. For now, her focus remains on supporting her family and making them proud.
