SENAPATI, Nov 1: The United Naga Council (UNC) extended warm wishes to the Liangmai Naga Community as they celebrated the Chaga-Ngee Festival, a significant post-harvest event deeply intertwined with their heritage and culture. However, UNC expressed strong disapproval of recent remarks made by the Committee for Tribal Unity (COTU), which they viewed as disrespectful to the Liangmai people and disruptive to the festival’s sanctity.
In a press release on Thursday, UNC criticized COTU’s claim over the Liangmai Naga ancestral lands as “Kuki areas,” calling it baseless and inappropriate. They stressed that Manipur, known for its cultural diversity, has historically promoted mutual respect across communities, fostering social harmony and peaceful coexistence.
In light of these values, UNC emphasized the need to uphold these traditions of respect, urging all groups to acknowledge each other’s histories and maintain harmony. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Naga ancestral lands, advocating for a peaceful coexistence rooted in mutual respect across Manipur’s communities.
