GUWAHATI, Nov 3: Normal train services resumed on Sunday in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section of Assam after disruptions that began on Thursday due to the derailment of a loaded goods wagon. According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, repairs on the railway track inside a tunnel near Mupa were completed, allowing for trial runs with light engines and goods trains on Saturday to ensure safety.
The derailment occurred on Thursday afternoon (October 31), prompting railway engineers and officials to work swiftly to restore regular train service connecting Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, southern Assam, and the rest of the country via Guwahati. “After confirming 100 percent safety, regular passenger train movement began from Sunday morning,” Sharma confirmed.
Prior to the resumption, passenger and goods train services in the hill section were suspended following the incident. As of Saturday, more than a dozen trains remained canceled, while others were either partially canceled or rescheduled. The goods wagon that derailed was part of a Silchar-bound train carrying food grains from northern India.
This is not the first disruption on this route; train services were also affected on October 17 and 18 when multiple coaches and an engine of the Mumbai-bound Agartala-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express derailed on the same Lumding-Badarpur Hill section. Many express, local, and goods trains that connect Manipur, southern Assam, Tripura, and Mizoram rely on this single-track route through the mountainous Dima Hasao district.
