IMPHAL, Nov 5: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), has voiced its support for the Thadou Convention’s recent endorsement of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur. This collective stance is seen as a move to protect the interests of the indigenous communities in the state.
Addressing the press, COCOMI Coordinator Somorendra Thokchom commended the Thadou Convention’s decision, viewing it as a step toward rebuilding ties among ethnic groups in Manipur. “We see the Thadou community’s decision as a positive step to restore the historic bonds among our communities,” Thokchom said.
He added that Manipur has suffered due to interference by outside influences that have caused instability in the state. He urged all communities to support policies aimed at safeguarding Manipur and noted the public’s strong backing of the government’s “War on Drugs” initiative.
Similarly, the Meitei Leepun, also expressed its appreciation for the Thadou community’s NRC endorsement. They highlighted the challenges faced by Manipur’s indigenous communities since May 3, 2023, citing violent incidents attributed to illegal immigrants, which have led to significant loss of lives and property. Meitei Leepun believes the Thadou community’s support is a positive move toward restoring peace and security in the state.
The organization also called upon other indigenous communities to rally together to protect Manipur’s cultural legacy and ensure a peaceful future for generations to come.
