GUWAHATI, Nov 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced the establishment of high-quality cancer care centres across the state, aimed at offering affordable treatment to cancer patients. On National Cancer Awareness Day, CM Sarma emphasized the importance of raising awareness about cancer and noted the significant advancements in treatment that have improved recovery prospects for patients.
The Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) is overseeing the development of cancer hospitals with an investment of Rs 135 crore. The first phase of the initiative includes hospitals in Silchar, Guwahati, and Diphu, with additional hospitals planned in Dhubri, Nalbari, Goalpara, Golaghat, Nagaon, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia in the second phase. These centres aim to provide accessible cancer care to residents across the state.
CM Sarma highlighted that Assam’s cancer care model is being emulated by other states, with the state working towards becoming a key hub for cancer treatment. He also noted the contribution of Tata Trusts, which has provided Rs 1,180 crore for the project. The Assam Cancer Care Foundation will manage 17 cancer care centres to ensure top-quality treatment.
In addition, CM Sarma inaugurated a cancer care unit at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, which is part of the state’s broader cancer care initiative. He assured that any financial shortfall would be covered by the state government, ensuring that all centres remain operational. To date, over 2.15 lakh patients have been treated at these facilities.
