SRINAGAR, Nov 7: The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Assembly was adjourned again on Thursday after BJP MLAs created a ruckus over a resolution passed the previous day, seeking the restoration of Article 370, which grants special status to the region. The opposition party, which claims the resolution is unconstitutional after the Article’s abrogation by Parliament in 2019, demanded that the resolution be expunged. In response, the ruling National Conference (NC) members countered, calling the BJP’s stance divisive and accusing them of “double standards.”
After BJP MLAs refused to settle down, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and PDS minister Satish Sharma fiercely criticized the opposition, asserting that they were responsible for creating division between Jammu and Kashmir. Sharma further declared, “Jammu can’t be separated from Kashmir,” emphasizing the need for unity. Despite the Speaker’s repeated requests for calm, the BJP members persisted, leading to an adjournment of the House until Friday.
The resolution, passed by voice vote, reaffirms the special constitutional guarantees of Article 370 and urges the Government of India to engage in dialogue with J&K’s elected representatives for restoration. The motion was supported by several Independent and opposition MLAs but faced strong opposition from the BJP, which has since vowed to prevent the Assembly from functioning unless the resolution is withdrawn.
The passing of this resolution, although politically significant, holds little constitutional weight, given the Supreme Court’s ruling on the abrogation of Article 370. The incident has intensified the ongoing political tensions between the J&K government and the central government.
